<p>The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (<abbrev xlink:title="Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change" id="ABBRID0EQAAC">IPCC</abbrev>) has stated that endangered species are at risk under projected climate change during and beyond the 21st century, especially as climate change interacts with other factors, such as habitat modification (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B18">Doherty et al. 2020</xref>), over-exploitation (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B5">Auliya et al. 2016</xref>), environmental pollution (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B24">Gibbons et al. 2000</xref>), and invasive species (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B20">Dueñas et al. 2021</xref>). Specifically, a considerably larger percentage of amphibians and reptiles are at risk compared to birds or mammals (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B16">Cordier et al. 2021</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B27">IUCN 2023</xref>). Although reptiles are important members of food chains and play pivotal roles in maintaining ecosystem dynamics (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B1">Ali et al. 2018</xref>), reptile populations have experienced serious declines worldwide (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B13">Chang et al. 2022</xref>), and approximately 20% of reptile species are considered threatened (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B27">IUCN 2023</xref>).</p>

The species has a body length of 150–200 mm, including the tail, and has a limited distribution in the Korean Peninsula, Mongolia, China, and Russia (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B55">Park et al. 2014</xref>). It is known as a specialist that generally occupies grassy sand dunes and riverbanks with little vegetation (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B55">Park et al. 2014</xref>). <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Eremias">Eremias</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="argus">argus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> has been designated as a level II endangered species by the Ministry of Environment in South Korea since 2005 (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B62">Song et al. 2013</xref>), although it is listed as Least Concern by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (<abbrev xlink:title="International Union for Conservation of Nature" id="ABBRID0EDDAC">IUCN</abbrev>) (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B52">Orlova et al. 2019</xref>). In South Korea, <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Eremias">E.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="argus">argus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> populations are suffering a sharp decline because of habitat loss, degradation, and fragmentation resulting from coastal sand dune development (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B34">Kim et al. 2012b</xref>). In addition, <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Eremias">E.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="argus">argus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> populations in South Korea exhibit genetic fragmentation, indicating limited movement of individuals between subpopulations even when subpopulations are geographically close to one another (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B55">Park et al. 2014</xref>). In light of the <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Eremias">E.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="argus">argus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> populations’ restricted range within Korea, Mongolia, China, and Russia, it is evident that the long-term viability of the species hinges on the conservation and restoration of its native habitats in these countries.</p>
<p>Globally, several studies on <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Eremias">E.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="argus">argus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> have been conducted, including research into the species’ population genetics (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B75">Zhao et al. 2011</xref>), metabolism (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B15">Chen et al. 2016</xref>), herbicide sensitivity (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B69">Wang et al. 2021</xref>), and reproductive strategy (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B65">Sun et al. 2013</xref>). Within South Korea, studies considering population genetics (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B55">Park et al. 2014</xref>), mating behavior (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B33">Kim et al. 2012a</xref>), population size (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B62">Song et al. 2013</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B12">Chang et al. 2021</xref>), habitat distribution (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B17">Do et al. 2022</xref>), and food resources (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B29">Jeong and Song 2010</xref>) have been conducted. While extensive studies have been conducted on the coastal sand dune and mountain habitats of <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Eremias">E.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="argus">argus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B32">Kim et al. 2011</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B34">Kim et al. 2012b</xref>), research into the species’ habitat environment, such as the vegetation structure and soil characteristics, on a fluvial island remains notably limited.</p>
<p>The effectiveness of conservation programs targeting endangered species relies heavily on a comprehensive understanding of these species’ specific habitat needs (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B63">Souter et al. 2007</xref>). Environmental characteristics are the result of interactions between biotic and abiotic factors, such as those relating to soil, vegetation, and microorganisms; these factors are highly interrelated and each is important to habitat formation (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B58">Reynolds et al. 2003</xref>). Soil properties are significantly influenced by certain environmental factors such as climate, topography, parent materials, vegetation, and disturbance due to human activity (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B14">Chen et al. 1997</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B6">Bakhshandeh et al. 2014</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B11">Cazzuffi et al. 2014</xref>). In particular, plant roots influence soil slope stability and erosion processes by impacting both hydrological processes and the geomechanical structure of the soil (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B11">Cazzuffi et al. 2014</xref>). In addition, plant roots alter their local environment in a number of ways, from modifying the soil’s biophysical, chemical, and mechanical properties, to stimulating microbial abundance and diversity, ultimately reinforcing soil mechanically (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B64">Stokes et al. 2014</xref>). The physical characteristics of soil, such as its hardness and porosity, are largely influenced by vegetation (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B25">Huang et al. 2007</xref>) and can impact the burrowing choices of different lizard species (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B72">Zaady and Bouskila 2002</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B74">Zeng et al. 2016</xref>). In addition, the growth and regenerative capacity of vegetation can be significantly affected by soil compaction (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B2">Amrein et al. 2005</xref>). Furthermore, external disturbances can exacerbate soil compaction in a positive feedback loop when direct compaction destroys vegetation cover (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B22">Garden et al. 2007</xref>). For reptiles in particular, vegetation and soil are crucial components of species’ habitat requirements, underscoring the significance of understanding these factors.</p>
<p>The goal of this study was to characterize the vegetation composition and soil environmental factors of <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Eremias">E.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="argus">argus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> living on the fluvial island, Doriseom Island, in South Korea. Because many elements constitute a habitat, this study was conducted by measuring not only abiotic factors such as soil hardness, cobble cover, and plant litter cover, but also biotic factors such as vegetation composition. We then compared how these environmental components differed between areas where <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Eremias">E.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="argus">argus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> individuals are common and areas where they are rare.</p>

Doriseom Island is a fluvial island at the confluence of the Namhangang River and the Cheongmicheon Stream (Fig. <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F1">1a, b</xref>). The island is approximately 906 m in length at its longest point, approximately 520 m wide, and has an area of approximately 292,370 m2. During the nearly 30 years from 1991 to 2020, the average annual temperature on Doriseom Island was 11.7 °C, and the average annual precipitation was 1,315.9 mm (KMA 2023). Doriseom Island has an entirely flat terrain formed by the accumulation of alluvial soil approximately 5 m above the surface of the Namhangang River and the Cheongmicheon Stream (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B48">National Geographic Information Institute 2021</xref>). There is no river running through the interior of the island, and during major floods in the summer, the entire island can be affected by flooding. There are no inhabitants and houses, although some researchers visit the island to study the plants and animals.</p>

Soil hardness was measured with five randomly selected replicates in each quadrat using a pocket penetrometer (Forestry Suppliers, Inc., 77114, Jackson, United States), and an average value of soil hardness was calculated from the five replicates. If the soil was covered with cobbles and it was impossible to measure soil hardness, soil hardness was recorded as 4.5 kg‧cm-2, which was the maximum value of the soil hardness gauge (measurement range 0.01–4.5 kg‧cm-2). Like the plant cover, the cobble and plant litter covers (%) were recorded in 5% increments within each quadrat.</p>

<p>First, to identify significant differences in vegetation composition between the F zone and the R zone, we performed a permutational multivariate analysis of variance (PMAV) with the “adonis” function from the vegan package using Bray–Curtis distance (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B51">Oksanen et al. 2022</xref>). Standard deviational ellipses (“ordiellipse” function) were plotted in the <abbrev xlink:title="non-metric multidimensional scaling" id="ABBRID0EEBAE">NMDS</abbrev> ordination to describe zone site compositional differences. Species cover values were log-transformed (log(cover + 1)) to minimize the influence of rare plant species (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B43">Májeková et al. 2016</xref>). To examine how the dominant plant species differed between the two zones, we performed a rank-sum analysis. The percent cover of plant species in each quadrat was summed and each species’ total sum of cover was sorted in descending order and visualized in a rank sum plot. In addition, native and exotic species richness and the percent cover of <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Coreopsis">Coreopsis</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="lanceolata">lanceolata</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>, which was the dominant plant species in Doriseom Island, were compared using a t-test. <p>In general, herbaceous species dominate Doriseom Island, but woody and shrub species such as black poplar (<tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Populus">Populus</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="nigra">nigra</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>), black locust (<tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Robinia">Robinia</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="pseudoacacia">pseudoacacia</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>), and indigo bush (<tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Amorpha">Amorpha</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="fruticosa">fruticosa</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>) are becoming more common. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B46">Menke (2003)</xref> reported that a number of lizard species that occupy grassland habitats are threatened by the invasion of woody bushes. In addition to trees, river flooding and human visits represent disturbances on Doriseom Island. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B22">Garden et al. (2007)</xref> found a positive correlation between the presence of native reptiles and a moderate level of weed cover, ranging from 25% to 50%, indicating that the structure offered by vegetation (e.g., refuge) may be more important than vegetation composition for lizard habitat. These findings support those of <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B56">Pinto et al. (2018)</xref> who noted that on a micro-habitat level, the likelihood of reptile presence, as well as their abundance and species diversity, grew as plant diversity increased. On the other hand, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B28">Jellinek et al. (2004)</xref> reported that overall lizard species richness was negatively associated with increased plant cover. The relationship between reptiles and vegetation can vary greatly depending on the species (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B60">Scott et al. 2006</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B47">Mizsei et al. 2020</xref>). Some reptiles prefer habitats with dense vegetation for a variety of reasons, including the vegetation’s role in offering shelter and protection from adverse conditions (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B4">Attum et al. 2006</xref>), refuge from predators (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B59">Sato et al. 2014</xref>), and reproduction sites (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B44">Martin and Murray 2011</xref>). Consequently, generalizing about the significance of plant cover for all reptiles is challenging.</p>

However, several predominant plant species were ubiquitously distributed throughout Doriseom Island, and soil environment, especially soil hardness and cobble cover, may affect vegetation structure. In previous research conducted by <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B63">Souter et al. (2007)</xref>, no specific vegetation structure was found to be correlated with lizard occupancy within grassland habitats, but potential for soil type to influence the plant community was found. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B10">Carpio et al. (2017)</xref> also indicated that a more diverse herbaceous ground cover, containing a greater variety of species and resembling natural vegetation, would offer a better solution for promoting diversity in reptile assemblages within agricultural landscapes. Because specific plant species are less important for reptile habitats than the physical conditions that they create, a broader array of habitats, such as a combination of open spaces in close proximity to vegetation cover, can fulfill the requirements of a habitat with diverse structure (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B21">Edgar et al. 2010</xref>).</p>

As the climate crisis intensifies, it facilitates the spread of invasive exotic species, which in turn changes the composition of native communities (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B68">Vilà et al. 2011</xref>). Some have also reported that when the average annual temperature rises by 1 °C, invasive exotic plants become better competitors; in addition, it is known that when invasive exotic species dominate a specific ecosystem, species diversity decreases and a highly homogenized community is created (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B38">Kortz and Magurran 2019</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B45">Mathakutha et al. 2019</xref>).
