Population growth by regions between 1950 and 2018. Source: authors’ own editing based on the database of FAOSTAT (FAO 2020a). Compared to 1950, the largest growth rates were recorded in the developing regions, mainly Africa and Asia. In developed regions, especially in Europe, a stagnating population is expected. These differences have great consequences. The large population increase and its regional differences will further exacerbate the issues related to the food system, which could increase food insecurity problems.
