This Special Issue explores the crucial role wetlands play in the context of biodiversity and climate change. It demonstrates the vital benefits riverine and coastal wetlands offer to nature and people, including their provision of nature-based solutions to the intertwined crises of biodiversity loss and climate change. It also assesses the vulnerability of these ecosystems to climatic and anthropogenic pressures, underlines the urgent need for action, and showcases concrete approaches for scaling up wetland restoration and conservation effectively. The transdisciplinary volume includes 15 peer-reviewed articles with contributions from over 100 European experts, combining the latest findings from natural and social science with recent policy insights and lessons learned from practice.

The Special Issue is divided into four thematic sections:

• Wetland biodiversity in a changing climate: Understanding their vulnerability

• Wetland ecosystem services and nature-based solutions for climate change mitigation and adaptation

• Wetland restoration in practice: Opportunities, overcoming barriers and scaling up implementation

• Wetland policy: Enabling a transition towards a resilient future

By bringing together perspectives from science, policy and practice from all across Europe, this Special Issue aims to become a ‘go-to’ resource for those seeking a comprehensive understanding of the unique interplay between wetlands, biodiversity and climate change. The volume follows a source-to-sea approach, connecting the spheres of riverine and coastal research and management, as a basis for integrated responses. While its scope is European, many of the Special Issue’s findings are also relevant to other regions of the world.

The development of this Special Issue was supported by the German Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN) with funds of the German Ministry for the Environment, Climate Action, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMUKN) as part of the research and development project “BioClim-Wetlands” (FKZ: 3521830200).

This special issue represents a collection of selected papers presented at the international Conference "The Fish of Muddy Waters" (Oct. 2025, Vienna, Austria). Specifically adapted wetland fish species, natives like the European mudminnow (Umbra krameri), the mud loach (=weatherfish, Misgurnus fossilis), crucian carp (Carassius carassius) and sunbleak (Leucaspius delineatus) as well as non-native newcomers, found in marginal habitats of flood plains were in the focus of the conference. The meeting aimed to bridge the gap between science, research and conservation of endangered native wetland fishes which are considered excellent indicators for the ecological integrity of their specific habitats and ecosystems characterized by often low oxygen concentrations. Because such habitats and ecosystems are highly endangered, wetland fish of muddy waters are definitely in peril. While fish and fishing is an important part of our cultural heritage, these animals might facilitate public awareness building as well as conservation policy to preserve biodiversity.

The transport sector (including infrastructure and energy networks) is driven and influenced by a multitude of factors and has a complex and often cascading impact on biodiversity and natural environment in general. While important progress has been made to understand and to mitigate it in the last decades, a lot more is needed for properly addressing this impact at landscape level. In other words, although a broad range of solutions and tools have been developed to tackle impacts ranging from vehicle-wildlife collisions to landscape barriers, the results are not yet satisfactory overall. A strengthened cooperation between stakeholders and specialists from different sectors, as well as the support of the general public is needed for developing functional and sustainable solutions.

The IENE 2022 International Conference organized in a hybrid format (in Cluj-Napoca, Romania and on zoom in September 2022) aimed to foster an integrated approach for mainstreaming biodiversity into transport sector (including infrastructure and energy networks), by exploring e.g., practical experiences, challenges and opportunities related to transport ecology and integrated solutions for ecological connectivity.

The special issue will comprise of research papers developed by experts in the field of transportation ecology and ecological connectivity, based on the presentations from the IENE 2022 International Conference, covering topics such as:

• The state of play after 20+ years of transport ecology
• Strategic needs, challenges and opportunities for the future of biodiversity and transport harmonization
• What works and what doesn't for harmonising transport and biodiversitty.
• Applied research and studies in the field of transport ecology.
• Safeguarding connectivity at landscape level
• Transdisciplinary approaches to landscape connectivity – challenges and solutions for cooperation between relevant sectors.

The rapid growth of linear infrastructure networks worldwide is posing a global threat to biodiversity and ecosystem services. However, in the last decades careful planning and appropriate solutions have been implemented to counteract the negative impacts of these infrastructures, that includes roads, railways, powerlines and others. Monitoring results are becoming increasingly available and innovative structures and actions are being tested and promoted. Valuable tools as landscape genetics, connectivity modelling, remote sensing, and GPS animal tracking, among other, are implemented into infrastructure planning and management. New ways of mitigation design and thinking (e.g. multifunctionality) are emerging or being consolidated. Habitats related to Linear Infrastructures are progressively seen as an opportunity for biodiversity conservation and key contributors to Green Infrastructure development.

The IENE2020 International Conference aimed to increase infrastructure sustainability by joining and sharing the experiences of those involved in linear infrastructures planning and management worldwide.

This Collection will comprise a selection of research papers presented in the IENE2020 International Conference (online, 12-14 January 2021), representing an opportunity for scientists, practitioners, agencies and policy makers to develop a new state-of-the-art in linear infrastructure sustainability. We welcome contributions related to any of the following topics:
