Centre of Excellence at the University of Debrecen Hosts 1st Biodiversity Conference
The 1st Biodiversity Conference, held at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences' Debrecen Committee headquarters, brought together experts to address current and future biodiversity challenges.
Nature Conservation subject editor Dr. Szabolcs Lengyel, Director of the Centre of Competence for Biodiversity, Water Management and Climate Change, helped to organise the event which showcased the Centre’s pivotal role in advancing ecological monitoring and conservation.
The Centre, established in 2023 at the University of Debrecen, aims to provide scientifically rigorous data to support biodiversity conservation and inform sustainable urban development. The conference highlighted the progress of the Debrecen Environmental Monitoring System, designed to assess biodiversity, soil, water, and air quality, with plans for baseline surveys to commence this year.

Nature Conservation’s Editor-in-Chief, Klaus Henle, attended the conference, emphasising its relevance to global biodiversity goals. This event marks a step towards safeguarding biodiversity while balancing urban growth and environmental health, setting a benchmark for municipal and global conservation strategies.
